Wednesday 16 February from 5-6.30pm in ib3.307 on Deakin's Waurn Ponds campus
This Wednesday 16 February from 5-6.30pm in room ib3.307 on Deakin's Waurn Ponds campus the Deakin Philosophical Society will meet to discuss a TED lecture by linguist Steven Pinker on the myth of violence. Pinker challenges the myth that modernity and technological advance have brought humankind terrible violence, arguing that we actually enjoy an era of unparalleled peace and safety. If you take the percentage of deaths at the hands of another human being as your measure of violence, from the sixteenth century there has been an steady decline in violence, Pinker claims.
We'll screen the ∼20min lecture from 5pm and then discuss the argument.
