Be sure to submit your nomination to mail@deakinphilosophicalsociety.com before midday on the day of the AGM.
Once the AGM is finished we’ll spend the remaining time discussing John Gray’s rebuttal of Steven Pinker’s ‘Myth of violence’ thesis. Seeing as how we’ve used Pinker’s argument on various occasions this year we thought it only fair to discuss Gray’s response. You might also be interested in Pinker’s brief rejoinder.

Enter Facebook, exit privacy?
Wednesday 12 October from 5-6.30pm in ib3.307 on the Waurn ponds campus
This Wednesday, 12 October, from 5-6.30pm in room ib3.307 on the Waurn Ponds campus the Deakin Philosophical Society will discuss whether, in the age of Facebook, privacy is a thing of the past? The discussion will focus on Gus Hosein and Eric King’s article ‘Age of insecurity’ from the special Privacy is Dead! Long Live Privacy edition of Index on Censorship (June 2011).
Electronic copies of Index on Censorship articles are accessible through the Deakin library website (choose Sage Premier for current issues).
In ‘Age of insecurity’, Hosein and King argue that new technologies gather ever-increasing amounts of personal information and store it in locations that grow more nebulous every day. The potential for various groups to harvest your data with a view to acting against your interests is very real. They urge vigilance in the face of technology companies that defend lax security policies with the claim that kids these days just don’t care about privacy.
Hope to see you there.
