The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Part Three
Wednesday 15 August from 5-6.30pm in ib3.307 on the Waurn Ponds campus
This Wednesday (15 Aug) will be the final week that the Deakin Philosophical Society spends watching and discussing Sophie Fiennes’ and Slavoj Žižek’s The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema.
Last week, in Part Two, Žižek analysed our relationship with fantasy. We came to see that there can be too much of a good thing when it comes to fantasy fulfilment. We may initially enjoy it, but after a while we find the satisfied id difficult to bear. Initially we escape into dreams; by the end, we return to reality to escape our dreams.
The screening of Part Three commences at 5pm in ib3.307.
For anybody looking to delve deeper into Žižek’s analysis of film, Matthew Sharpe’s entry on Lacan at the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy — in particular, the section on Lacan’s philosophical anthropology — is a good place to begin.
Also, a reminder that you can keep abreast of coming Deakin Philosophy Seminars through philevents.
